Ocean
We actively collaborate with stakeholders and partner organizations to address the pressing issues impacting our oceans. Our primary focus is safeguarding marine ecosystems from pollution and exploitation, with a strong emphasis on reducing plastic waste and supporting sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities. Through coordinated efforts, GERF has organized numerous beach clean-up initiatives aimed at removing plastics and other pollutants that threaten marine life. These activities are vital in protecting the health of our oceans and preserving biodiversity along the Tanzanian coast. In addition to physical clean-ups, GERF provides valuable guidance to Beach Management Units (BMUs) on best practices for beach maintenance. This contribution further underscores our commitment to long-term ecological preservation and practical, community-driven conservation.
GERF has implemented several impactful initiatives in collaboration with environmental stakeholders and local communities:
BLUE-WAVES INITIATIVES:
- Clean-Ups
- Bagamoyo Fish Market Clean-Up and Sanitation Support (June 2022)
In a joint effort with partner organizations, GERF participated in cleaning the Bagamoyo fish market. The event included an environmental awareness session for 100 members of the local community and the distribution of 100 cleaning equipment to support ongoing hygiene and waste management efforts.
- Kawe Beach Clean-Up Campaign (September 2023)
In collaboration with other environmental stakeholders , GERF joined the Kawe Beach clean-up initiative. This campaign was part of our ongoing efforts to preserve Dar es Salaam’s beaches and marine environment by removing plastics and other pollutants.
- Mbudya Island Marine Pollution Assessment and Clean-Up (2024)
In 2024, GERF spearheaded a comprehensive clean-up and waste audit on Mbudya Island alongside other stakeholders. The team collected and categorized marine debris, finding that: 85% of the waste was plastic bottles, 80% consisted of foam pieces, 52% were flip-flops and shoes, 21% were glass bottles
Beyond local initiatives, GERF actively takes part in global commemorations such as World Clean-Up Day, International Oceans Day, and other clean-up activities in partnership with environmental organizations. These events serve as platforms to amplify awareness and galvanize collective action for the protection of our oceans.
2. Trainings
- Coco Beach Boys Environmental Conservation Training (August 2022)
As part of our community outreach program, GERF provided 100 beach cleaning tools and environmental conservation training to the 20 Coco Beach Boys group. The training covered safe waste handling and the importance of maintaining clean and safe beaches for both locals and tourists.
At GERF, we believe in fostering a harmonious relationship between communities and the ocean. By combining environmental conservation with social empowerment, we are building a more sustainable future for both people and the planet.
