We are excited to share that the Global Ecology Restoration Foundation (GERF) was invited by UNCDF to participate in the Clean Cooking Symposium held from June 19-21. This event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the challenges and solutions for transitioning to clean cooking methods in Tanzania.
GERF's Role and Efforts
At GERF, we are committed to promoting clean cooking solutions and raising awareness about their benefits. We recognize that the majority of Tanzanians rely on traditional cooking methods, which pose health risks and contribute to environmental degradation. Our goal is to facilitate a gradual transition to clean cooking solutions that respect cultural norms and values while improving health and environmental outcomes.
Challenges Identified
During the symposium, several key challenges were identified:
- Misconceptions about clean cooking solutions.
- Lack of information and awareness.
- Poor communication and uncoordinated awareness efforts.
- Cultural attachment to traditional cooking methods.
GERF's Solutions and Plans
To address these challenges, GERF is implementing the following strategies:
1. Awareness and Behavioral Change Campaign:
- We are launching a comprehensive campaign to educate the community about clean cooking solutions, their benefits, and how they can be adopted.
- This includes conducting formative research to inform our awareness-raising strategy.
2. Culturally Sensitive Solutions:
- We have developed and introduced improved stoves that use less firewood and charcoal. These stoves align with cultural practices, making them more acceptable to the community.
- By maintaining familiar cooking methods, we can ensure a smoother transition while benefiting health and the environment.
3. Phased Implementation:
- We understand that transitioning to clean cooking solutions will take time. Therefore, we are adopting a phased approach to introduce these solutions gradually.
- This includes the regeneration of trees to ensure a sustainable supply of firewood in the interim.
4. Collaboration and Community Engagement:
- We are working closely with stakeholders, including women’s associations, schools, community leaders, and the private sector, to amplify our efforts.
- Utilizing existing networks and community structures like churches, mosques, and CBOs, we aim to spread awareness and drive behavioral change.
5. National Branding and Door-to-Door Campaigns:
- We plan to create a national brand for clean cooking solutions that involves various stakeholders.
- Door-to-door campaigns will be conducted to engage directly with households, providing information and support.
Our Vision is dedicated to make a significant impact on health, environmental protection, and sustainability in Tanzania. By addressing misconceptions, enhancing knowledge, and promoting culturally sensitive solutions, we aim to create a cleaner, healthier future for all.
