Plastics and Our Ocean: Dar es salaams Challenge

/     /   Plastics and Our Ocean: Dar es salaams Challenge
28Apr

Dar es salaam produces about 5300 tonnes of waste everyday, but only 28% is properly collected. Plastics make up 13-16% of the city's total waste. where some areas like Temeke plastics reach up to 21.6%. Of all the plastic waste generated around 70% is dumped improperly. A large part of it 40% ends up in rivers and the ocean, harming fish, turtles and marine ecosystems.

Each resident in dar es salaam produces about 30kgs of plastic waste per year, much higher than the national average. Currently, only 5-15% waste is recycled. To save our planet, we need better recycling systems, strong policies against single use palstics and more community education.

Our organization is committed to protecting the environment. We provide knowledge to communities on how to properly dispose of waste.During our clean-up activities, we segregate waste carefully so it can be reused by industries to make new products giving waste a second life and reducing pollution.
