We recently had the opportunity to explore a chemical fiber factory in Dar es salaam, where plastic waste is transformed into sysnthetic fiber. This remarkable process starts with plastic bottles, which are first cut into small pieces , throughly washed in boiling water and then heated into extremely high temperature. The material is then cooled and spun into tiny threads of sythentic fiber. These threads are eventually shreadded into fluffy blobs that resemble to that of cotton wool.
This innovative approach is both an enviromental and economic win. Not only does it help to reduce plastic waste in the environment, but it also creates income opportunities. Individuals can collect plastic waste and sell it to the factory, earning a livelihood while helping to keep our surroundings clean.
GERF, is pleased to see factories like this paving way for sustainable solutions that benefit both our planet and our communities. Imagine the impact if more facillities embraced this model! Our environment would see less plastic litter and people would have new ways to support their families.
